Elon at East Carolina
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — The East Carolina Pirates, riding the momentum of a walk-off win, are set to host the Elon Phoenix in a nonconference midweek baseball matchup Tuesday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. EDT under a forecast of 65-degree temperatures and rain.
East Carolina (12-8) enters after a dramatic 8-7 victory in 10 innings over Penn on Sunday. Davin Whitaker provided the key blow with a two-run home run, part of a 2-for-3 performance. The Pirates have won four of their last five.
Elon (9-10) looks to rebound from a difficult weekend, having been swept in a three-game series at UNC Wilmington, including an 11-0 loss Sunday. The Phoenix were limited to just one run total in the final two games of the series.
A player to watch for Elon is right-hander Owen Winebarger, who has been dominant in stretches. Over his last three appearances, spanning 14.1 innings against UNC Wilmington, North Carolina State and North Carolina, he has allowed just three earned runs on zero hits. However, his season was marred by a rough outing on Feb. 22 at Charleston Southern where he allowed six earned runs while recording only two outs.
For East Carolina, Whitaker’s bat will be central. The outfielder is coming off a clutch performance and has driven in four runs over his last five games played.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is East Carolina 6, Elon 4.
Following this game, East Carolina opens American Athletic Conference play at home against UAB on Friday. Elon begins Colonial Athletic Association action on the road at Northeastern the same day.
