Oregon State at San Diego

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — A dominant start from Eric Segura and a relentless offensive performance powered Oregon State to a series sweep, as the Beavers defeated San Diego 10-3 in a nonconference baseball game Sunday evening at USD Sports Center.

Segura, the Beavers’ top star, set the tone with 5 2/3 hitless innings, striking out five and walking two. The right-hander extended his scoreless innings streak to 11 1/3 over his last two starts, following a similar outing against Xavier on March 8. He exited to a standing ovation from a large contingent of Oregon State fans after issuing a walk in the sixth inning.

The most important part of the game was Segura’s early mastery, which stifled any Toreros momentum and allowed the Beavers’ bats to build an insurmountable lead. San Diego did not record its first hit until the fourth inning, long after Oregon State had seized control.

The Beavers broke the game open in the second inning against San Diego starter Drake Frize. After Jacob Krieg’s ground-rule double, Cooper Vance laced a two-run double down the left field line. Vance then stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Jayden Lobliner, giving Oregon State a 3-0 lead without the benefit of a home run.

Oregon State added to its lead with solo power. Vance led off the fourth inning with his first home run of the season. Bryce Hubbard launched his fourth homer of the year in the seventh, and AJ Singer connected for his third in the eighth. Krieg capped the scoring with a two-run blast, his fourth, in the ninth inning to provide the final margin.

The Beavers collected 11 hits, with Vance leading the way by going 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Singer and Krieg each had two hits and two RBIs.

San Diego avoided the shutout with a three-run rally in the seventh inning. Connor Meidroth drove in a run with a single, and Lobliner followed with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, off reliever Isaac Yeager. That prompted Oregon State to bring in Zach Kmatz, who escaped the inning and then worked a scoreless eighth. Tanner Douglas struck out the side in the ninth to seal the victory.

The Toreros managed just seven hits and struck out 13 times. They also ran into multiple outs on the basepaths, with three runners caught stealing.

With the win, Oregon State improved to 14-4 overall and completed a three-game road sweep after winning the first two games of the series 7-5 and 11-5. San Diego fell to 7-12.

The victory exceeded the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-3 Oregon State win. The Beavers’ ELO win probability was 69.4%.

Oregon State travels to face Portland on Tuesday before a three-game series at UC Irvine next weekend. San Diego is off until it opens West Coast Conference play at home against Gonzaga on March 20.
