LSU at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Jake Brown launched a three-run homer as part of a six-run seventh inning, and the LSU Tigers exploded late to salvage the final game of their Southeastern Conference series with a 16-9 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores on Sunday evening at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.

The Tigers, who dropped the first two games of the series by a combined three runs, erupted for 10 runs over the seventh and eighth innings to turn a tight contest into a rout. LSU improved to 14-7 overall, while Vanderbilt fell to 13-8.

After Vanderbilt starter Brennan Seiber provided five innings of steady relief, allowing just two hits and three earned runs after entering in the second, the LSU offense broke through in the seventh. Trailing 5-1, the Tigers loaded the bases against Seiber and reliever Ryan Schulz. Brown then delivered the decisive blow, hammering a 1-0 offering over the center field wall for a three-run shot that gave LSU a 9-6 lead it would not relinquish.

The blast was Brown’s second home run in three games this series and capped a six-RBI day for the right fielder, who finished 2 for 4. His hit sparked a relentless offensive finish for the Tigers, who scored five more times in the eighth inning. Cade Arrambide contributed a two-run single in that frame, part of his three-RBI day, as LSU batted around.

The offensive outburst overshadowed a spirited comeback attempt by Vanderbilt, which had clawed back from an early 6-0 deficit. The Commodores struck for four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by RBI doubles from Brodie Johnston and Laif John, and a run-scoring double from Chris Maldonado.

Tommy Goodin then led off the sixth inning with his second solo home run of the game, pulling Vanderbilt within a run at 6-5. After Brown’s homer put LSU back up by three in the top of the seventh, Vanderbilt pinch-hitter Mack Whitcomb answered with a three-run blast of his own in the bottom half, tying the game at 9.

LSU’s bullpen, however, silenced the Commodores from there. Deven Sheerin, Cooper Williams and William Schmidt combined for 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out nine batters to close the door. Sheerin earned the win.

The game began as a pitcher’s duel for the first four innings, with LSU’s William Schmidt and Vanderbilt’s Seiber trading zeros after the Tigers staked themselves to an early lead. LSU scored four times in the first inning without a hit, capitalizing on two hit batters, a walk, a passed ball, a sacrifice fly and an RBI double from Arrambide. They added two more in the second on a Brady Stanfield RBI single and a Brown sacrifice fly.

Vanderbilt got on the board in the second on a solo home run by RJ Mancini, but the Commodores left the bases loaded in the third and stranded two more in the fifth as they struggled to capitalize against Schmidt and a parade of LSU relievers until their fifth-inning rally.

The 16 runs marked a season-high for LSU in SEC play and provided a potent response after dropping the series opener 13-12 and the second game 11-3. Both teams finished with 10 hits.

LSU returns home to face Grambling on Tuesday. Vanderbilt will host Indiana on Tuesday before continuing SEC play next weekend against Mississippi State.
