Oregon State at San Diego
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — AJ Singer drove in eight runs with a pair of home runs and Ethan Kleinschmit struck out nine over five no-hit innings as Oregon State routed San Diego 11-5 on Saturday at USD Sports Center.
The Beavers, who improved to 13-4, scored in each of the first three innings and blew the game open with a seven-run second, powered by Singer’s first grand slam of the season. San Diego fell to 7-11.
Singer, who entered the game in a 3-for-14 slump over his previous four contests, provided all the offense Oregon State would need. His most important swing came in the top of the second inning with the Beavers already leading 3-0. After a single, two walks and a hit-by-pitch forced in a run, Singer launched a 1-1 pitch from reliever Porter Rovin deep over the left-field wall for a grand slam, his first homer of the year, to extend the lead to 8-0.
He was not done. In the seventh inning, with two runners on via a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Singer connected for his second homer of the game, another three-run shot to left field off Aidan Gonzalez to push the advantage to 11-1.
While Singer supplied the offense, Kleinschmit (2-0) dominated on the mound. The right-hander allowed one unearned run, walked two and struck out nine, including striking out the side in the first inning. He did not allow a hit, with San Diego’s only run against him coming in the third on an RBI infield single by Andrew Gauna following a double and an error. Kleinschmit was relieved after five innings and 86 pitches.
San Diego’s offense, which managed 10 hits, did not get its first hit until the seventh inning off Oregon State reliever Trey Morris. The Toreros capitalized on a fielding error by shortstop Tyler Inge to score four unearned runs in that frame, highlighted by a two-run double from Jayden Lobliner. They added another unearned run later in the inning on an RBI double by CJ Moran.
Christian Garcia provided a bright spot for San Diego’s staff, entering in the third inning and throwing three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Lucas Shannon and Nate DeSchryver also pitched scoreless relief for the Toreros.
Oregon State’s bullpen combination of Morris, AJ Hutcheson and Jack Giordano allowed just one hit over the final four innings to secure the win.
The Beavers scored their first two runs in the opening inning on a two-run single by designated hitter Bryce Hubbard, who finished with three RBIs. Oregon State drew 11 walks and were hit by four pitches in the game.
The teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday. The victory exceeded the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-3 Oregon State win. The Beavers’ ELO win probability was 68.9%.
