Hawaii at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Interstat) — Isaiah Magdaleno delivered a dominant performance on the mound, and the Hawaii Warriors’ offense erupted for a seven-run second inning to cruise past the Long Beach State Dirtbags 11-1 in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference series at Blair Field on Friday night.

Magdaleno, a right-hander for Hawaii, was nearly untouchable after surrendering a solo home run in the first inning. He retired the final 17 batters he faced, finishing with six innings pitched, allowing just that one run on no hits. He walked one and struck out nine. The performance was a stark turnaround from his previous start, a loss to Cal Poly on March 6 where he allowed four earned runs.

The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the second inning, which transformed a 1-0 deficit into a commanding lead. Long Beach State starter Caleb Anderson struggled with command, loading the bases with walks before being relieved by Kaden Iglesias. Tate Shimao then drove in the tying run with a fielder’s choice. Kamana Nahaku followed with an RBI single to give Hawaii the lead for good. Gabe Wright cleared the bases with a two-run triple, and Ben Zeigler-Namoa capped the explosive frame with an RBI single. A sacrifice fly by Kyson Watanabe brought home the seventh run of the inning, staking the Warriors to a 7-1 advantage.

Long Beach State’s lone bright spot came from Jake Evans, who launched a solo home run to deep left field in the bottom of the first for the Dirtbags’ only run. The team managed seven hits but grounded into two double plays and could not solve Magdaleno or the Hawaii bullpen.

The Warriors added four insurance runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. With two on and one out, pinch-hitter Stone Greco delivered an RBI single. Shimao then provided the exclamation point, lacing a three-run double to left-center field to extend the lead to 11-1. Shimao finished the night 2 for 5 with a double and four RBIs. Zeigler-Namoa also had two hits and two RBIs.

Hawaii’s bullpen preserved the shutout after Magdaleno’s departure. Grant Garman pitched a scoreless seventh, and Derek Valdez closed out the final two innings without allowing a hit, aided by a game-ending double play in the ninth.

Caleb Anderson took the loss for Long Beach State, allowing three earned runs on three hits over 4 1/3 innings. Reliever Mason Tymick provided two scoreless innings of relief for the Dirtbags.

With the victory, Hawaii improved to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in Big West play. Long Beach State fell to 4-13 and 0-1. The result exceeded the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 5-2 Hawaii win. The teams are scheduled to continue the series Saturday and Sunday at Blair Field.
