Stephen F. Austin at Southeastern Louisiana
HAMMOND, La. (Interstat) — Brady St. Pierre delivered a dominant performance on the mound, and Southeastern Louisiana’s offense provided ample support with 13 hits in an 8-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Friday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Lions evened their season record at 10-8, matching the Lumberjacks, who also fell to 10-8.
The most important part of the game was St. Pierre’s command from the outset. The right-hander stifled Stephen F. Austin over seven brilliant innings, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while striking out eight. He faced the minimum through four innings, with the only Lumberjack to reach—Carson Creel on a first-inning single—being erased on a double play. St. Pierre’s outing built significantly on his previous start against Grambling and set a tone the visitors never countered.
Southeastern Louisiana broke through in the second inning against Stephen F. Austin starter Gabriel LeBlanc. After an error put Parker Woods on third, Justin Williams launched a two-run homer to left field, his first of the season, to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. The rally continued as Ben Robichaux singled and scored on an RBI double from Dane Watts.
The Lions extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Robichaux and Watts singled, setting the stage for Connor Cuff, who cleared the bases with a two-run triple down the right field line.
Stephen F. Austin’s offense, which managed only three hits total, was held scoreless until the eighth inning. After St. Pierre exited, reliever Triston Todorowski gave up a leadoff triple to Cole Adkisson. Adkisson then scored on a groundout by Kade Schneider, accounting for the Lumberjacks’ lone run.
Southeastern Louisiana put the game out of reach in the seventh. Following a pitching change to Charlie Feris, Robichaux hammered a two-run homer down the left field line, his fourth of the season, scoring Williams to make it 8-0.
Robichaux finished 3 for 5 with the homer, two RBIs and three runs scored. Cuff went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Williams was 2 for 4 with his two-run homer. Watts added two hits and an RBI.
For Stephen F. Austin, Julian Swift had two of the team’s three hits, a double and a single. LeBlanc took the loss, charged with five earned runs over four innings. Brennan Greer provided two scoreless innings of relief in the fifth and sixth.
The Lions’ victory defied a pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a closer 7-5 Southeastern Louisiana win, though the team’s ELO rating gave them a 79 percent probability to win.
The teams continue their three-game series on Saturday.
