South Alabama at Louisiana-Lafayette
Sun Belt Heavyweights Set for Showdown in Lafayette
LAFAYETTE, La. (Interstat) — Two of the Sun Belt Conference’s hottest teams will open a critical early-season series Friday when the South Alabama Jaguars visit the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns at M.L. Tigue Moore Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under clear skies with temperatures near 60 degrees.
The matchup features the league’s top two teams by winning percentage. Louisiana-Lafayette (13-4) enters with a slight edge in the standings over South Alabama (12-5), setting the stage for a pivotal three-game set.
The Jaguars arrive riding momentum from a 10-3 midweek win over Southeastern Louisiana, powered by a strong bullpen effort. A key arm in that victory, right-hander Max Miller, is a player to watch. Miller tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts on Wednesday, continuing an up-and-down season that includes a five-inning, one-run outing at College of Charleston on Feb. 21.
The Ragin’ Cajuns counter with their own reliable reliever in Parker Smith. The right-hander has been a stalwart, allowing no earned runs in four of his last five appearances. He was dominant in Tuesday’s 11-7 win over Texas-Rio Grande Valley, throwing three innings of one-hit ball.
South Alabama’s offense, which exploded for 21 runs against West Georgia on Feb. 28, will be tested by a Louisiana-Lafayette squad that has won 10 of its last 12 games. The Cajuns’ lineup is anchored by productive hitters like first baseman Lee Amedee and catcher Colton Brown, who each drove in a run in the midweek victory.
This series opener kicks off a demanding stretch for both clubs. According to Interstat’s game simulator, Friday’s contest could be a high-scoring affair, projecting an 8-7 victory for the visiting Jaguars.
Following the weekend series, both teams face in-state Power Five opponents next week, with South Alabama hosting Alabama and Louisiana-Lafayette traveling to Houston.
