Butler at Wichita State
WICHITA, Kan. (Interstat) — What began as a promising start for Butler quickly spiraled into a historic onslaught as the Wichita State Shockers erupted for 27 runs, dismantling the Butler Bulldogs 27-3 in a nonconference baseball game Thursday at Eck Stadium.
The Bulldogs, who fell to 2-12, stunned the home crowd early. Matthew Rhoades launched a solo home run in the top of the first inning, and Butler added two more in the second on an RBI groundout by Brezinski and a run-scoring single by Moore to take a 3-0 lead.
That advantage was short-lived. Wichita State responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by an RBI single from Owen Washburn and a solo homer from catcher Max Kaufer. The Shockers then seized complete control with a four-run second inning, taking a 5-3 lead, before unleashing a catastrophic third inning that broke the game wide open.
The bottom of the third inning was the definitive turning point. Wichita State sent 19 batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs on six hits, six walks, two hit batters and two Butler errors. The frame featured a parade of relievers for the Bulldogs and saw the Shockers bat around before recording an out. Key blows included a two-run single by Kaleb Duncan and a two-run double by Jaden Gustafson, who finished with four RBIs. The inning transformed a 5-3 contest into a 16-3 rout and set the tone for the remainder of the blowout.
Wichita State continued to pour it on. Kaufer blasted his second homer of the game, a two-run shot, in the fourth inning to make it 18-3. The Shockers added five more in the fifth, aided by two more Butler errors, and capped the scoring with a two-run double from pinch-hitter Nolan Ganter in the sixth.
Kaufer was the standout performer, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs, continuing a powerful stretch at the plate. Gustafson also drove in four runs on three hits. Starter Matthew Cuccias earned the win for Wichita State, going five innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six. Ayden Benson provided two scoreless innings of relief.
For Butler, which managed only five hits, the loss was its eighth in a row. Starter Niko Kreuzer was charged with two unearned runs in one-third of an inning of relief. The Bulldogs used seven pitchers in total, who combined to issue 13 walks and hit three batters.
The Shockers improved to 10-6 with the victory, which far exceeded the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 6-1 Wichita State win. The teams are scheduled to continue their series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
