Saint Mary`s at San Diego State
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Saint Mary’s Gaels and San Diego State Aztecs will conclude their three-game series under the lights Sunday evening at USD Sports Center, with both teams looking to secure the series victory after splitting the first two contests.
The Aztecs (9-5) evened the series with a 3-2 win on Friday night. San Diego State’s Aidan Russell was dominant in relief, striking out six over 4 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Third baseman Tyce Peterson provided the decisive blow with a three-run home run.
Saint Mary’s (7-5) saw a brilliant start from John Damozonio go to waste in that loss. The right-hander threw six no-hit innings, striking out five and walking none, but the Gaels’ bullpen faltered late.
Damozonio is a key player to watch for the Gaels. Over his last three starts, he has allowed just two earned runs in 17 innings with 17 strikeouts. For the Aztecs, Russell has been nearly untouchable out of the bullpen, having not allowed an earned run in his last four appearances spanning 12 1/3 innings, while racking up 16 strikeouts.
The weather forecast calls for a mild evening with a temperature of 74 degrees and cloudy skies at first pitch.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Sunday’s contest projects to be a higher-scoring affair than the previous two, with a predicted final score of Saint Mary’s 8, San Diego State 6.
Following Sunday’s series finale, Saint Mary’s will travel to face UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday. San Diego State will also hit the road Tuesday for a matchup at Cal State Fullerton.
