Sacramento State at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — Behind a dominant pitching performance from Carson Timothy and a decisive sixth-inning rally, the Sacramento State Hornets stunned the LSU Tigers 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field to secure a series victory.

The Hornets (5-10), who entered the weekend having lost eight of their last nine games, took two of three from the heavily favored Tigers (12-5) after a 5-4 win on Saturday. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 7-2 LSU victory, giving the Tigers an 87.6% probability to win.

The story of the game was Timothy. The Sacramento State starter was nearly untouchable, carrying a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. He finished with 6 2/3 innings pitched, allowing no hits and one unearned run while striking out four and walking two. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and did not allow a Tiger to reach second base until the seventh.

LSU starter William Schmidt matched Timothy through five innings, racking up eight strikeouts. The Hornets broke through in the third, however, without a hard-hit ball. Jose Cobarrubias singled and later scored on Sam Harry’s two-out double to left. Harry then came home on a throwing error by LSU catcher Arrambide after a third-strike wild pitch, giving Sacramento State a 2-0 lead.

The game turned in the top of the sixth. With two on and two out, Schmidt was relieved by Cooper Williams, who immediately hit a batter to load the bases. Gavin Guidry entered and walked Jace Jeremiah, forcing in a run. Pinch-hitter Michael Perazzo then delivered the critical blow, lacing a two-run single through the left side to extend the lead to 5-0.

Perazzo added a sacrifice fly in the eighth to cap the scoring, finishing with three RBIs.

LSU’s only run came in the seventh, capitalizing on a Sacramento State error. With two outs and runners on first and second, an error by the Hornets’ third baseman allowed a run to score and ended Timothy’s no-hit bid, as Ashton Simpson followed with an RBI single. Trevor Wilson relieved Timothy and got the final out of the inning, then pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings to earn the save.

The Tigers, who out-hit the Hornets 15-4 in a Friday rout, managed just six singles Sunday and went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

Sacramento State continues its lengthy road stretch with a home game against Massachusetts-Lowell on Tuesday. LSU looks to rebound when it hosts Creighton on Tuesday before opening Southeastern Conference play at Vanderbilt next weekend.
