Mercer at Florida State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Two of the nation’s hottest teams collide Wednesday when the Mercer Bears visit the Florida State Seminoles at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature near 76 degrees.
Mercer (11-1) brings a nine-game winning streak to Tallahassee, having swept series against Columbia, Florida A&M and Penn. The Bears’ offense is averaging 8.6 runs per game during the streak. Their lone loss was a 19-3 defeat to Troy on Feb. 14.
Florida State (8-2) has won four straight, including a weekend sweep of The Citadel highlighted by dominant pitching. The Seminoles have allowed just two total runs over their last three games.
A key matchup will feature Mercer’s red-hot shortstop, Titan Kamaka, against a stout Florida State pitching staff. Kamaka is batting .500 (12 for 24) with six RBIs over his last seven games. He went 4 for 4 with four RBIs in Sunday’s 10-5 win over Penn.
The Seminoles are expected to start right-hander Bryson Moore (1-1, 2.16 ERA). Moore was brilliant in his last outing, throwing six shutout innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts in a 2-0 win over The Citadel on Sunday.
Mercer’s most recent victory was a 10-5 decision over Penn on Sunday, powered by Kamaka’s four hits and four RBIs. Jeb Johnson earned the win in relief, and Chris Katz added a two-run homer.
Florida State last played Sunday, defeating The Citadel 2-0. Moore and reliever Chris Knier combined on a two-hitter, while John Stuetzer went 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a high-scoring affair, predicting an 8-7 victory for Mercer.
Following Wednesday’s contest, Mercer hosts Alcorn State for a three-game series starting Friday. Florida State remains home to begin a three-game set with Northern Kentucky on Friday.
