Florida Rides Peterson’s Arm, Lawson’s Bat to Rout Miami in Series Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — Liam Peterson and Jackson Barberi combined on a two-hitter Friday afternoon as the fourth-ranked Florida Gators defeated the fifth-ranked Miami Hurricanes 7-2 at Mark Light Field.

Peterson, Florida’s star right-hander, dominated over 5 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out eight and walking five. Barberi earned the save with 3 1/3 perfect innings of relief. The Gators (10-1) provided all the offense needed in the first inning when shortstop Brendan Lawson hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season. Lawson finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Miami (10-1) scored both its runs in the sixth inning on RBI singles by Daniel Liam and Brylan West. Hurricanes starter AJ Ciscar took the loss despite a quality start, allowing three earned runs over seven innings. The game was a matchup of previously unbeaten teams and the opener of a three-game series.
