Alcorn State at Louisiana-Monroe

Alcorn State Braves (1-6) at Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (3-5)

MONROE, La. (Interstat) — The Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks will look to build on their best performance of the young season when they host the struggling Alcorn State Braves in a non-conference matchup Wednesday at Warhawk Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 60 degrees.

ULM (3-5) is coming off a dominant 9-1 road win at New Orleans on Sunday, powered by a stellar combined pitching effort. The Warhawks will be a heavy favorite against an Alcorn State team that has lost six straight since a season-opening victory.

A key player to watch for the Warhawks is right-hander JC Dermody, who delivered six shutout innings with seven strikeouts in Sunday’s win. His performance anchored a pitching staff that allowed just one hit in the victory.

The Braves (1-6) are seeking to halt a skid that includes being outscored 50-6 during a four-game stretch last week. Alcorn State was swept in a three-game series at Houston Christian over the weekend, culminating in a 10-4 loss Sunday.

A bright spot for Alcorn State has been reliever Hayden Konkler. In his last two appearances against Houston Christian, he combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one earned run. Konkler pitched 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief in Sunday’s defeat.

ULM’s offense showed signs of life Sunday, with third baseman Jake Haggard going 3 for 5 with two RBIs. The Warhawks will aim to continue that production against an Alcorn State pitching staff that has a team ERA of 10.62.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Louisiana-Monroe 3, Alcorn State 1.

Following Wednesday’s contest, ULM begins a three-game home series against Western Illinois on Friday. Alcorn State travels to Jackson, Mississippi, for a neutral-site game against UNC Asheville on Saturday.
