Illinois at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. (Interstat) — The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers look to continue their strong start and secure a series sweep when they host the Illinois Fighting Illini in a nonconference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature near 61 degrees.

Coastal Carolina (4-1) has won four of its first five, including a 13-2 rout of VCU on Friday and a 1-0 victory over Illinois on Saturday. The Chanticleers’ offense exploded for 13 hits in the Friday win, highlighted by Ty Barrango’s pinch-hit grand slam. On the mound, reliever Case Bosch was dominant, throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed and three strikeouts to earn the win.

Illinois (2-4) seeks to salvage the final game of the series after dropping a narrow pitchers’ duel Saturday and a 3-2 decision to VCU on Friday. The Fighting Illini will look to starter Ryan Ohm to provide stability. Ohm was excellent in his last outing against VCU, allowing no earned runs over 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts, but took a hard-luck loss.

The Chanticleers’ pitching has been a strength early, holding opponents to three runs or fewer in four of five games. Illinois’ offense has been inconsistent, scoring four or fewer runs in four of its six contests.

According to Interstat, Coastal Carolina is a heavy favorite with a 75.30% probability to win. The service’s game simulator projects a 7-5 victory for the Chanticleers.

After Sunday, Coastal Carolina hosts Campbell on Tuesday. Illinois travels to Greenville, South Carolina, next weekend for a three-game set against Michigan State, College of Charleston and Albany.
