Minnesota at Florida Gulf Coast
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles remained undefeated Wednesday, scoring a walk-off run on a ninth-inning error to edge the Minnesota Golden Gophers 6-5 at Swanson Stadium.
In a game defined by missed opportunities and late-inning drama, the Eagles overcame a four-run deficit and capitalized on a critical mistake to move to 4-0 this season. Minnesota fell to 3-1.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the score tied 5-5, Florida Gulf Coast’s Ian Nelson led off with a double down the left field line. After a strikeout, Evan Lasher hit a sharp ground ball to Minnesota shortstop Jack Spanier, whose throw to first base sailed wide, allowing Nelson to score the winning run from second base.
The error was a crushing end for the Golden Gophers, who had just staged a two-run rally in the top of the ninth to reclaim the lead. Easton Richter reached on a dropped third strike and wild pitch, and later scored on Ty Allen’s RBI single. Charlie Sutherland, who walked, then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Lippe to put Minnesota ahead 5-4.
Florida Gulf Coast’s offense, which amassed 14 hits compared to Minnesota’s five, chipped away at an early deficit. The Golden Gophers built their lead on solo home runs. Brady Martin hit his first of the season in the third inning, and Weber Neels launched a two-run homer in the sixth, scoring Spanier who had walked and stolen second, to make it 4-1.
The Eagles began their comeback in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs against Minnesota reliever Will Urban. A run-scoring single by MAC Gorostola and an RBI single by Trevor Comer cut the lead to 4-3. Florida Gulf Coast tied the game in the eighth on an RBI double by Charles Embury, setting the stage for the chaotic finish.
Minnesota starter Connor Gregory pitched four and one-third innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Florida Gulf Coast’s starter, Jacob Rogers, gave up one run on three hits over three innings before giving way to the bullpen. The Eagles used three relievers, with Brandon Pocol earning the win after recording the final out in the top of the ninth.
Sam Jaenke took the loss for Minnesota, surrendering the unearned run in the ninth.
According to pregame projections by Interstat, Florida Gulf Coast was given a 61.3% probability to win, with a simulated final score of 7-5.
