PERTH, Australia (Interstat) — The Tasmania JackJumpers, defying preseason projections and a hostile road environment, edged the Perth Wildcats 75-72 in a defensive struggle at Perth Arena on Saturday.

In a game where offensive efficiency was at a premium, Tasmania’s ability to create extra possessions proved decisive. The JackJumpers forced 13 Perth turnovers while committing only 10 of their own, and their seven steals more than doubled the Wildcats’ total of three. Despite being outrebounded 38-33, Tasmania’s defense held firm in the final moments to secure the victory.

The contest unfolded in contrasting halves. Perth established an early lead, taking a 21-13 advantage after the first quarter behind a strong opening period. The JackJumpers responded with a dominant second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 20-14 to narrow the gap to just two points at halftime.

Tasmania carried that momentum into the third quarter, winning the period 21-14 to take a five-point lead into the final frame. Perth mounted a fierce comeback in the fourth, outscoring the visitors 23-21, but the JackJumpers made crucial stops in the game’s final minute to preserve the narrow win.

Bryce Hamilton led all scorers and was the engine for Tasmania, finishing with a game-high 26 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists in 32 minutes of action. His performance was vital on a night where overall shooting percentages were low. Tasmania shot 42.9% from the floor (30 of 70) and a frigid 25.0% from three-point range (6 of 24). Perth fared similarly, shooting 40.3% from the field (27 of 67) and 24.0% from beyond the arc (6 of 25).

For the Wildcats, center Jo Lual-Acuil recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Point guard Mason Jones added 16 points for Perth, which was more efficient from the free-throw line, making 12 of 14 attempts compared to Tasmania’s 9 of 17.

The win improves Tasmania’s early season record to 3-1, while Perth falls to 1-2 in National Basketball League play. The result was an upset according to Interstat’s pregame metrics, which had projected a Perth victory with an 87-84 final score and gave the Wildcats an 83.4% probability of winning.

Both teams continue their NBL campaigns on Saturday, Sept. 27. Tasmania will travel to face the Illawarra Hawks, while Perth hits the road for a matchup with the New Zealand Breakers. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch in Tasmania on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
