MELBOURNE, Australia (Interstat) — The South East Melbourne Phoenix delivered an emphatic statement on Saturday night, overwhelming the Cairns Taipans 114-77 in a dominant National Basketball League performance at John Cain Arena.

The Phoenix, playing on their home floor, used a devastating second-quarter blitz to turn a competitive contest into a rout, outscoring the winless Taipans 36-20 in the period to take a commanding 59-35 lead into halftime. The offensive explosion never relented as South East Melbourne cruised to its second victory of the young season, improving to 2-1.

The game was a study in contrasting efficiencies. South East Melbourne’s offensive execution was nearly flawless, posting an elite offensive rating of 127.5 by scoring 114 points on just 89 possessions. Their ball movement was exceptional, dishing out 14 assists while committing a mere six turnovers. Defensively, they were equally disruptive, registering 14 steals that fueled their transition game.

Conversely, Cairns struggled in nearly every facet. The Taipans managed an offensive rating of just 87.1, hampered by a paltry two assists against 19 turnovers. Their inability to take care of the ball or generate easy looks proved costly against the relentless Phoenix pressure.

The Phoenix attack was a balanced and deep effort, with six players scoring in double figures. Angus Glover came off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points, while Hunter Maldonado provided a spark with 16 points and five assists. Veterans Nathan Sobey and John Brown III orchestrated the offense, with Sobey tallying 13 points and eight assists, and Brown adding 14 points and four assists. The interior was controlled by Gorjok Gak and Jordan Hunter, who combined for 21 points and 14 rebounds.

For the struggling Taipans, now 0-3 to start the season, guard Reyne Smith led the way with 19 points. Jack McVeigh, a native of Canberra, contributed 18 points in a team-high 35 minutes of action. Center Marcus Lee recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the losing effort.

The final margin of 37 points far exceeded pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a much closer affair, with a final score of 89-84 in favor of the Phoenix. The combined score of 191 points also easily surpassed the over/under line of 196.5.

The loss extends a difficult opening stretch for Cairns, which previously fell to the Tasmania JackJumpers in overtime and to the New Zealand Breakers. They will look to secure their first win when they return home to host the Brisbane Bullets on Friday, Sept. 26.

South East Melbourne, which split its first two games against New Zealand and Sydney, now turns its attention to a crosstown showdown against the Melbourne United on Thursday, Sept. 25.
