Ottawa vs. Hamilton

(Interstat) — Ottawa Blackjacks look to build on their season-opening victory when they visit the winless Hamilton Honey Badgers on Thursday at CAA Center in Brampton, Ontario.

Ottawa (1-0) opened the Canadian Elite Basketball League season Sunday with a 96-89 road win over Edmonton. The Blackjacks, playing in their second consecutive road game, will face a Hamilton side that has dropped its first two games. The Honey Badgers lost 91-77 at Scarborough on Monday and fell 117-104 at home to Scarborough on Aug. 1.

Javonte Smart leads Ottawa’s attack. The shooting guard posted 22 points and 10 assists in the win over Edmonton, and is coming off a stretch of high production: he scored 39 points at Winnipeg on July 31 and 30 points at Niagara on July 26. In his last seven games, Smart has averaged 27.1 points. He also recorded 26 points, seven rebounds and 13 assists against Hamilton on July 12, though Ottawa lost that meeting 105-98.

Isaih Moore added 16 points and 13 rebounds against Edmonton, and Alex Fudge contributed eight points and nine rebounds with three blocked shots.

Hamilton is seeking its first win behind forward Brandon Muntu. Muntu led the Honey Badgers in the loss at Scarborough with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and he also scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds in Hamilton’s July 12 win at Ottawa. In that game, he played 34 minutes and helped hold off a late Ottawa rally. Danilo Djuricic added 10 points and six rebounds in Monday’s loss, while Keon Ambrose-Hylton had 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

The Honey Badgers have shown flashes of resilience despite the winless start. They rallied to beat Montreal 90-89 on July 30, but that game did not count in the league standings. Hamilton has struggled defensively, allowing 117 and 91 points in back-to-back losses. Ottawa, meanwhile, wants to establish consistency after a narrow loss at Winnipeg and a defeat at Montreal earlier in its schedule.

Thursday’s game marks the second meeting between the teams this season. In their first matchup, Hamilton won 105-98 behind a balanced effort. Ottawa will aim to return the favor and remain unbeaten in the CEBL regular season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern.
