Correcaminos vs. Irapuato
IRAPUATO, Mexico (Interstat) -- Correcaminos will try to end a two-game losing streak when it visits Irapuato on Monday, Aug. 10, in a Mexican LNBP matchup.
Correcaminos enters at 1-2, while Irapuato is 1-1. The game is part of a busy stretch for both teams.
Correcaminos is coming off a 98-76 loss Thursday at Zacatecas, one night after losing 95-76 at the same team. Its only win this season came Aug. 1, a 93-58 home victory over San Luis Potosi.
Irapuato split a two-game set at Diablos Rojos, losing 99-73 on Wednesday before rebounding with an 86-82 win Thursday. Zachary Brown led Irapuato in that win with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Billy Garrett added 14 points.
Forward Taylor Johnson has been Correcaminos’ most consistent scorer. In his last five games, he averaged 15.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He scored 22 points against San Luis Potosi on July 31, 17 at Leon on July 24 and 16 at Zacatecas on Aug. 5. In Thursday’s loss, he finished with 13 points, three rebounds and one assist in 22 minutes.
Guard Franger Pirela is Irapuato’s top player to watch. He averaged 18.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.2 assists over his last five games. Pirela scored 26 points with five assists in Thursday’s victory over Diablos Rojos. He also had 25 points and 10 assists against Zacatecas on July 30 and 17 points at Dorados on July 25.
Correcaminos will need more production from its supporting cast. In Thursday’s loss, O’Showen Williams had 10 points and two assists, and Donoven Carlisle added 11 points and five rebounds. If Correcaminos can balance Johnson’s scoring with Carlisle’s inside play and Williams’ distribution, it should have a better chance against an Irapuato team that has shown some defensive vulnerability in recent games.
Irapuato, meanwhile, will look to build on its win. Brown’s presence in the paint and Pirela’s ability to run the offense give Irapuato a solid one-two punch. Garrett’s perimeter shooting adds another dimension.
Monday’s game is important for both teams early in the season. Correcaminos wants to avoid falling below .500? Actually it already is below. It wants to stop its slide. Irapuato wants to even? It is already even? 1-1, can go above .500 with a win. A victory would give Irapuato a winning record for the first time this season, while Correcaminos would even? no, Correcaminos could go 2-2? Wait if Correcaminos wins, it becomes 2-2 (still .500). If Irapuato wins, it becomes 2-1. If Irapuato loses, it becomes 1-2. So stakes are clear.
Tipoff is scheduled for Monday night at Irapuato. Both teams are expected to be at full strength.
