Zacatecas vs. Irapuato

IRAPUATO, Mexico (Interstat) — The Zacatecas (13-11) will visit the Irapuato (1-18) on Thursday in a Mexican LNBP matchup that pits a team jockeying for playoff positioning against a club still searching for its second win of the season.

Zacatecas enters the game after a 95-80 loss at San Luis Potosi on Friday, July 24, its second consecutive defeat. Guard Romeao Ferguson has been the team’s most consistent offensive threat, averaging 21 points and 6.5 rebounds over his last two outings. In the loss to San Luis Potosi, Ferguson played 34 minutes and finished with 22 points, five rebounds and three assists. The previous night, in an 87-86 loss at the same opponent, he posted 20 points and eight rebounds in 30 minutes.

Ferguson is joined in the backcourt by point guard Joaquin Valinotti, who scored 19 points with four rebounds and one assist in the July 24 game, and small forward Anyelo Cisneros Sierra, who added nine points and three rebounds. Zacatecas has shown resilience on the road this season, splitting a two-game set at Fuerza Regia in October and sweeping San Luis Potosi at home earlier in the month. However, the club has dropped its last two away contests.

Irapuato, meanwhile, has lost 10 consecutive games dating to September and owns the league’s worst record. The team dropped a pair of road games at Dorados on July 24-25, falling 84-80 and 89-79. Guard Franger Pirela has been a bright spot, averaging 15 points, 5.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists in those two contests. In the July 25 loss, he recorded 17 points, five rebounds and six assists in 31 minutes; the previous night he had 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists in 35 minutes.

Forward Gatluak James contributed seven points and eight rebounds in the most recent game, while Zachary Brown added 13 points and three rebounds. Irapuato’s only win this season came in a 94-84 home victory over Xalapa on Sept. 9, but the team has struggled to generate consistent offense, averaging just 73.5 points over its last 10 losses.

Thursday’s game tips off at a time to be announced. Zacatecas will look to regain its road form behind Ferguson’s scoring, while Irapuato hopes Pirela can spark an upset against a team that has won four of its last seven meetings with the cellar-dweller.
