AP Sports Preview

COMODORO RIVADAVIA, Argentina (Interstat) — Two of the Liga A’s top teams meet Saturday when Quimsa visits Gimnasia Indalo at Estadio Socios Fundadores, with both clubs jockeying for playoff positioning.

Quimsa enters the game at 30-15, while Gimnasia Indalo sits at 31-16. The teams have split their last five meetings, though Quimsa won the most recent matchup 88-60 on Wednesday behind a balanced attack. Gimnasia Indalo won three of the previous four head-to-head games, including an 80-79 victory June 8 and an 82-73 win June 6.

Quimsa center Sam Freeman has been a consistent force against Gimnasia Indalo. Over his last five appearances against the home team, Freeman has averaged 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in roughly 19 minutes per game. He posted 12 points and seven rebounds in Wednesday’s blowout win. In the June 13 overtime victory, Freeman contributed six points and nine rebounds. He also recorded 14 points and four rebounds in a June 11 loss. Across his past eight games overall, Freeman has shot efficiently while providing rim protection.

Gimnasia Indalo center Bryan Carabali has also been productive in the series. He scored 11 points with two blocks in Wednesday’s loss and had nine points and two blocks in the June 13 overtime defeat. Carabali recorded six points and three blocks in a June 11 victory over Quimsa. In the June 8 win, he pulled down seven rebounds to go with five points and two blocks. Over his last 10 games, Carabali has averaged roughly 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while serving as a defensive anchor.

The teams have followed similar patterns this season. Quimsa has won six of its last 10 games, with three of those victories coming against Gimnasia Indalo or Boca Juniors. Gimnasia Indalo has won seven of its last 10, including two victories over Ferro Carril Oeste and two over Quimsa.

Saturday’s game carries implications for the standings, as both clubs sit near the top of the league. Home-court advantage could prove decisive for Gimnasia Indalo, which has won three of its last four home games against Quimsa. However, the visitors’ recent 88-60 statement win suggests the series remains volatile.

Tipoff is set for Saturday evening at the 8,000-seat arena in Comodoro Rivadavia.
