Gimnasia Indalo vs. Quimsa

SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO, Argentina (Interstat) — The top two teams in the Argentinian Liga A collide Wednesday when Quimsa hosts Gimnasia Indalo in a pivotal late-season showdown at Estadio Ciudad de Santiago del Estero.

Quimsa (29-15) enters having snapped a three-game losing streak against Gimnasia with a 77-74 overtime victory Saturday in Comodoro Rivadavia. Leonardo Lema logged 41 minutes, scoring 19 points with six rebounds and two assists to lead the Fusionados. The win pulled Quimsa within two games of Gimnasia (31-15) in the standings with the regular season winding down.

Gimnasia had won three straight meetings before Saturday’s overtime loss, including a 76-59 blowout Thursday and an 80-79 thriller June 8 at Quimsa. The visitors hold a 4-2 edge in the season series but will be seeking to reclaim momentum on the road.

Marcos Chacon is the catalyst for Gimnasia. The point guard averages 14.3 points over his last four games against Quimsa, highlighted by 17 points, six rebounds and one assist in Saturday’s defeat. He also posted 11 points and five assists in the June 11 win. Chacon has been efficient, shooting better than 45 percent from the field in the past two weeks.

Quimsa counters with Lema, a shooting guard who has been a workhorse in the series. He played 41 minutes Saturday and 35 minutes in a 73-82 loss June 6, when he scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Lema’s versatility — he has averaged 8.0 rebounds in the last four meetings — will be key against Gimnasia’s frontline.

Federico Grun and Anyelo Cisneros Sierra provided solid support Saturday for Gimnasia, combining for 23 points. Quimsa got 16 points from Brandon Robinson and six points and nine rebounds from center Sam Freeman in the overtime win.

Both teams are coming off postseason-like intensity. Gimnasia split a four-game set with Ferro Carril Oeste before the recent Quimsa series, winning two of four. Quimsa took two of three from Boca Juniors prior to the Gimnasia stretch.

Wednesday’s winner gains critical positioning for home-court advantage in the playoffs. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. local time.
