Jal. Astros vs. Ciudad de Mexico
MEXICO CITY (Interstat) — The Jal. Astros, owners of the CIBACOPA’s best record at 72-12, face the Ciudad de Mexico club on Friday at 8 p.m. local time in a rematch of a game the host team won by a single point.
Ciudad de Mexico enters the contest at 24-26, but its 93-92 victory Wednesday snapped a five-game losing streak against the league-leading Astros. The result halted a stretch of four consecutive head-to-head defeats, three of which were by double digits.
The series has been lopsided overall this season. Jal. Astros has won seven of eight meetings, including a 114-75 blowout Tuesday in which it scored 62 points in the paint. The home team has held an edge in only two of those games, both decided by one possession.
Sindarius Thornwell, a small forward for Jal. Astros, is a player to watch. In Wednesday’s loss, he logged 29 minutes and posted 18 points, four rebounds and six assists. Over his past five games against Ciudad de Mexico, Thornwell is averaging 16.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per contest. He has shot efficiently from the field in that stretch, including a 21-point, five-rebound, one-assist performance June 5.
Trahson Burrell, a power forward for Ciudad de Mexico, recorded a triple-double in Wednesday’s victory: 24 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in 39 minutes. The performance was a bounce-back after he managed just six points in Tuesday’s blowout loss. Burrell has been the team’s most consistent producer in the series, averaging 17.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists over four games against Jal. Astros.
In Wednesday’s game, guard Trey Burke added 18 points and four rebounds for Jal. Astros, while forward Yoanki Mansia contributed 15 points and eight rebounds. For Ciudad de Mexico, center Chuba Ohams finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, and guard Terrell Brown scored 18 points.
