Tijuana vs. Ciudad de Mexico

CIUDAD DE MEXICO (Interstat) — The CIBACOPA regular season reaches its final day Sunday when the Tijuana Zonkeys visit Ciudad de Mexico in a matchup that will decide playoff positioning.

Tijuana (21-22) and Ciudad de Mexico (22-22) are separated by one game in the standings. A victory for either side could determine home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason. Tipoff is 7 p.m. local time.

The teams have met five times in the past 10 days, splitting the series 2-2 prior to Friday’s contest, which Ciudad de Mexico won 112-107 in overtime. That victory gave the home team a 3-2 edge in the season series entering Sunday.

Shane Rector has been Tijuana’s most consistent performer against Ciudad de Mexico. The point guard averaged 16.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists across the five head-to-head games entering the weekend. He scored a series-high 31 points in a 96-91 loss on May 26, and followed with 11 points and seven assists in a 96-84 win May 27. In Friday’s overtime loss, Rector logged 37 minutes and finished with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Rector’s overall form has been solid; he scored 20 points in a 103-102 win at Guaymas on May 12 and added 19 points in a loss to Obregon on May 15.

Chuba Ohams anchors the interior for Ciudad de Mexico. The center has recorded four double-doubles in his past seven games. In Friday’s win, Ohams posted 21 points and 13 rebounds in 32 minutes. He produced 22 points and eight rebounds in a 96-91 victory at Tijuana on May 26, and added 17 points and eight boards in a 84-96 road loss May 27.

Ohams’ rebounding has been a constant; he grabbed 16 boards in a loss to Jal. Astros on May 15 and 15 rebounds in a 108-98 win at Los Mochis on May 11.

Ciudad de Mexico enters Sunday having won two of its last three games, both against Tijuana. The team beat the Zonkeys 110-88 at home on May 22 behind Trahson Burrell’s 18 points and eight rebounds, and Jacob Calloway added 19 points Friday.

Tijuana has struggled in Ciudad de Mexico this season, losing three of four road games in the series. The Zonkeys’ only win in the capital came May 21, 93-83.

The game marks the regular-season finale for both clubs. A Ciudad de Mexico victory would give the team a 23-22 record and likely a higher seed, while a Tijuana win would pull the Zonkeys to .500 at 22-22 and potentially flip the first-round matchup.
