Caracas vs. Margarita
LA ASUNCION, Venezuela (Interstat) — Caracas visits Margarita on Sunday in a Venezuelan SLB matchup that pits the league’s top team against a struggling home side desperate to snap a two-game skid.
Caracas (24-6) enters Gimnasio Ciudad de la Asuncion having won four straight, including two home victories over Margarita this week. The Cocodrilos swept the Guaiqueries 80-68 on Wednesday and 76-63 on Thursday, with swingman Luis Montero dominating both contests. Montero, a guard who has recorded double-doubles in five of his past six outings, posted 23 points and 16 rebounds in Thursday’s win and added 13 rebounds and five assists two nights earlier. Over his last eight games, Montero is averaging 17.0 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting efficiently from the floor. Center Luis Colon also contributed 22 points and four rebounds in Thursday’s victory, giving Caracas a potent interior presence.
Margarita (19-13) returns home after back-to-back losses to Caracas and a mixed week that included a 87-83 win over Carabobo on May 24. The Guaiqueries have dropped four of their last five overall. Point guard Gelvis Solano has been the offensive engine, scoring 16 and 14 points in the two recent losses to Caracas. He erupted for 27 points and five rebounds in the win over Carabobo, but his production has been inconsistent — he managed only two points in a May 15 victory against Carabobo and three points in a May 6 defeat at Avila. Solano will need support from forward Juan Guerrero, who had 10 points and six rebounds in Thursday’s loss, and guard James Reese V, who added 16 points.
The teams have split their season series at 2-2, but Caracas has taken the last two. Margarita won 82-80 at home on March 11 behind a late surge. The Cocodrilos’ depth and Montero’s recent dominance make them favorites, but Margarita’s home-court advantage could swing momentum. Tipoff is Sunday at 7 p.m. local.
