Regatas Corrientes vs. Ferro Carril Oeste
OBERÁ, Argentina (Interstat) — Two of the top teams in the Argentinian Liga A meet Friday night when Ferro Carril Oeste hosts Regatas Corrientes at Hector Etchart Arena.
Ferro Carril Oeste (24-16) enters the 8 p.m. local time tipoff having won two of the past three meetings between the clubs. The most recent came Wednesday, when Ferro Carril Oeste defeated Regatas Corrientes 90-75 in Buenos Aires. Emiliano Lezcano led that victory with 29 points, five rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes.
Lezcano has been a consistent force for Ferro Carril Oeste. In his last eight games, the shooting guard has scored at least 14 points seven times, including a 29-point outburst Wednesday and a 17-point, three-rebound performance in an 80-78 win over Peñarol on April 26. He is averaging 18.3 points over those contests.
Regatas Corrientes (23-15) will look to even the season series. The teams have split four meetings this year, with the home team winning each time. Ferro Carril Oeste won 95-89 on May 8 and 90-75 on May 13, while Regatas Corrientes won 81-60 on May 10 and 77-70 on March 23.
Juan Pablo Corbalan has been Regatas Corrientes’ top offensive threat in recent matchups against Ferro Carril Oeste. The shooting guard scored 24 points in Wednesday’s loss, 21 points in the May 10 win and 23 points in the May 8 defeat. Over his past five games, Corbalan has averaged 21.4 points while playing at least 27 minutes in four of those contests.
Regatas Corrientes enters on a three-game winning streak away from home, including a 93-69 rout of Argentino de Junin on April 19 in which Corbalan scored 17 points in 18 minutes. The team has won five of its last six overall.
Ferro Carril Oeste has won four of its last six. The team’s depth was on display Wednesday, as Jonatan Torresi added 20 points and five rebounds and Jose Defelippo chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and two assists.
The meeting carries playoff positioning significance, as both clubs sit in the upper half of the Liga A standings. Ferro Carril Oeste’s 24 wins place it one game ahead of Regatas Corrientes in the win column, though the visitors have played two fewer games.
Friday’s contest marks the fifth head-to-head meeting of the season, with the teams scheduled to meet once more before the regular season concludes.
