Guaymas vs. Culiacan
CULIACAN, Mexico (Interstat) — The Culiacan Caballeros host the Guaymas Ostioneros on Friday in a CIBACOPA matchup at Polideportivo Juan S. Millan, with both teams jostling for position near the bottom of the league standings.
Culiacan (16-19) enters on a two-game skid after a 102-89 loss on May 9, while Guaymas (14-21) has dropped three of its last four, including an 83-80 defeat to Tijuana on Wednesday.
The Caballeros have won the season series 1-1, taking a narrow 89-87 victory at Guaymas on March 14 after losing 105-92 the night before. Friday’s game tips off at 8 p.m. local time.
Guaymas will lean on guard Jimond Ivey, who has averaged 20.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists over his last 10 games. In Wednesday’s loss, Ivey logged 38 minutes, scoring 23 points with seven rebounds and seven assists. He also posted a 31-point, 10-rebound double-double in a 104-100 overtime loss at Hermosillo on May 8.
Culiacan counters with center Torren Jones, who has been a double-double machine. Jones tallied 25 points and 14 rebounds in the May 9 defeat, and he has recorded at least 12 rebounds in four of his last five outings. Over that span, he is averaging 21.2 points and 9.2 boards.
The Caballeros have been strong at home, winning four of their last five at Polideportivo Juan S. Millan. Guaymas, meanwhile, has lost three straight road games and is 5-12 away from home this season.
Both teams are fighting to climb out of the bottom half of the 10-team CIBACOPA. A win for Culiacan would pull them to .500, while Guaymas needs a victory to avoid falling further behind.
Key contributors for Guaymas include center Johnny Hamilton, who had 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench against Tijuana, and forward Jaden Bediako, who added two points, eight rebounds and five blocks. For Culiacan, forward Tre’Darius McCallum scored 18 points in the May 9 loss, and point guard Roddy Peters dished six assists.
Friday’s game marks the third meeting between the two sides this season. The winner will take the season series lead.
