BUENOS AIRES (Interstat) — Independiente defeated La Union 97-92 Saturday in an Argentinian Liga A contest. The home team led 25-20 after the first quarter, but La Union rallied to take a 46-45 halftime lead. Independiente outscored La Union 30-25 in the third quarter to regain control and held on despite a 22-21 edge for the visitors in the fourth. Center Agustin Caffaro, the top star for Independiente, had 16 points and nine rebounds. Enzo Filipetti scored 17 points, Patricio Tabarez added 15, and Jose Rolfi Fortunato and Felipe Barrionuevo each had 12. For La Union, forward Alexis Elsener recorded 23 points and 12 rebounds. Windi Graterol contributed 16 points and nine rebounds, Brandon Beavers scored 14, and Jonathan Machuca had 11. Independiente shot 26 of 33 from the free-throw line, while La Union made 18 of 25. The win improved Independiente to 21-16, while La Union fell to 19-19.
