Ferro Carril Oeste vs. Peñarol
MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina (Interstat) — Ferro Carril Oeste visits Peñarol on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Polideportivo Islas Malvinas in a Liga A matchup that could shift the standings in the tight middle of the Argentine basketball league.
Ferro Carril Oeste enters with a 21-15 record across all competitions, while Peñarol sits at 17-17. The teams have met four times this season, with Ferro winning three of those contests. The most recent meeting came Thursday, April 30, when Peñarol defeated Ferro 87-75 in Mar del Plata, snapping a three-game losing streak against its rival.
In that game, Peñarol’s productive players included point guards Facundo Vazquez and Luciano Guerra, along with shooting guard Agustin Perez. For Ferro, shooting guard Jose Defelippo, center Kevin Hernandez and small forward Alejandro Diez were the most productive.
Ferro has been inconsistent lately. After dropping a 90-78 decision at Obras Sanitarias on April 2, the team rebounded with a 100-74 win over Argentino de Junin on April 5, then lost 76-75 at home to Obera on April 8. A 90-81 victory at Boca Juniors on April 11 and an 81-74 win at Sante Fe on April 15 followed. But Ferro then lost three of its next four games against Peñarol, including the April 24 and April 30 meetings, with only an 80-78 home win over Peñarol on April 26 breaking the skid.
Peñarol, meanwhile, has struggled to find consistency. The team lost five of six games from March 14 to April 14, including defeats to San Lorenzo (79-71), Boca Juniors (86-70) and Independiente (102-107, a high-scoring loss), Instituto Cordoba (68-83, a win), Atenas (95-85 loss), La Union (91-85 loss) and Obera (84-81 loss). A narrow 85-83 home win over Sante Fe on April 4 provided a brief respite. Since April 16, Peñarol has played only against Ferro, splitting the two most recent meetings.
Saturday’s game will be played at Polideportivo Islas Malvinas, a venue that has been favorable to the home side in recent head-to-head matchups. Peñarol’s 87-75 win there Thursday gives the team confidence heading into the rematch. Ferro, however, has won three of the last four meetings overall and will look to regain the momentum it held earlier in the season.
Both teams feature strong backcourts. Ferro’s Defelippo has been a consistent scoring threat, while Peñarol’s Vazquez and Guerra orchestrate the offense. The frontcourt battle between Hernandez and Peñarol’s interior defense could be decisive.
With the season nearing its midpoint, every game carries weight. Ferro sits comfortably above .500 but needs to reverse its recent slide against a Peñarol team that is trying to climb back to an even record. A win Saturday would give Peñarol consecutive victories over its rival for the first time this season, while Ferro aims to reassert its dominance in the series.
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time.
