Pinheiros vs. Ulbra
RIO CLARO, Brazil (Interstat) — Pinheiros visits Ulbra on Sunday at Ginasio Felipe Karam in a Brazilian NBB matchup that pits one of the league’s top teams against a struggling opponent.
Pinheiros enters with a 29-8 record, second-best in the league, while Ulbra sits at 10-26. The visiting team has dominated the series recently, winning four of the past five meetings, including a 95-80 victory Tuesday at home.
Forward Agapy Santos has been a key contributor for Pinheiros. In that win over Ulbra, he played 24 minutes and finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Over his last five games, Santos has averaged 12.4 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting efficiently. He posted a double-double on April 4 at Corinthians (15 points, 14 rebounds) and scored 13 with eight boards in an 83-81 win over Paraiba on April 1.
Ulbra’s top threat is forward Stan Scott. He scored a game-high 23 points in Tuesday’s loss to Pinheiros, shooting 9 of 17 from the field in 21 minutes. Scott has been productive despite his team’s struggles, averaging 13.4 points over his last five games. He had 19 points and three assists in an 78-70 win at Pato Basquete on April 6, and scored 13 with six rebounds against Franca on April 12.
Pinheiros has won seven of its last 10 games overall. The team’s recent stretch includes a 88-55 rout of Pato Basquete on April 16, led by David Sloan’s 20 points and five assists. Sloan, a guard, has been a steady floor general, while guard Betinho Nardi Duarte adds scoring punch — 15 points in Tuesday’s win.
Ulbra, meanwhile, has dropped five of its last six. Its lone bright spot came April 16, a 95-63 blowout of Bauru in which guard Luis Fernando Sacco scored 17 points and center Matheus Custodio added 11 points and six blocks. Custodio’s interior presence could be key against Pinheiros’s balanced attack.
The teams last played Friday — a 0-0 score line that likely indicates a postponement or cancellation — but Tuesday’s contest showed the disparity: Pinheiros outscored Ulbra 28-18 in the third quarter and never trailed after halftime.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time.
