San Martin vs. Boca Juniors
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Interstat) — Boca Juniors, winners of five of its last six games, hosts San Martin on Saturday at Estadio Luis Conde in a pivotal Liga A matchup.
Boca (26-18) enters on a three-game winning streak after a 87-75 victory over Obras Sanitarias on Tuesday. San Martin (15-18) has split its last four contests, most recently falling 89-68 at Santa Fe on April 19.
The home team boasts a deep roster, led by center Francisco Caffaro. In Tuesday’s win, the 6-foot-11 big man posted 18 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists in 23 minutes. Over his last six games, Caffaro has averaged 13.3 points and 8.2 rebounds, including a 17-point, 11-rebound effort against Santa Fe on April 6. He also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 81-58 blowout of Flamengo on April 17.
San Martin counters with forward Lautaro Berra Fernandez, who has been inconsistent but productive. The 6-foot-8 forward scored 22 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in a 79-77 win at Platense on April 17, and had 10 points and 9 rebounds in the loss to Santa Fe. Over his last five games, Berra Fernandez is averaging 10.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in about 20 minutes per game. He will need to be efficient against a Boca defense that has held opponents to 78.2 points per game over the last 10 contests.
The teams split their two previous meetings this season. San Martin won 85-79 at home on Jan. 28, but Boca responded with an 89-56 blowout in Buenos Aires on Oct. 1. That 33-point margin was Boca’s largest win of the season, while San Martin’s offense struggled, shooting 32% from the field.
San Martin’s recent form has been erratic. After a 82-79 win at Argentino de Junin on March 28, they lost by 17 at Racing de Chivilcoy, then beat Ferro Carril Oeste 71-65 before a 102-66 drubbing by Gimnasia Indalo. The team has a 6-10 road record this season.
Boca, meanwhile, has won nine of its last 11 games at home. The team’s balanced attack features guard Michael Smith, who contributed 14 points against Obras, and point guard Santiago Scala, who averaged 6.0 assists in the last two wins. Boca’s offense ranks among the top four in Liga A in scoring (84.7 points per game), while San Martin’s defense allows 81.3 points per game.
With five games remaining in the regular season, the outcome could affect playoff seeding. Boca sits third in the standings, while San Martin is 11th and fighting for a postseason berth. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time.
