Montreal vs. Sudbury

Preview: Toundra, Five Set for Pivotal BSL Clash

GREATER SUDBURY, Ontario (Interstat) — A tightly contested season series will see its latest chapter Friday when the Sudbury Five host the Montreal Toundra in a Basketball Super League matchup at Sudbury Community Arena.

The Five (11-9) hold a 3-2 edge in head-to-head play this season, but the games have been dramatic. Their most recent meeting was a 126-121 overtime victory for Sudbury on March 28. Just over a week earlier, Montreal (9-10) secured a 102-99 overtime win on its home court on March 8.

Friday’s contest carries playoff implications, with Sudbury aiming to solidify its position above .500 and Montreal seeking to climb back to an even record.

Montreal will lean on forward Kyle Steward, who is coming off a dominant 31-point, six-rebound performance in the overtime loss here last week. Steward has averaged 21.4 points and 6.6 rebounds over his last five games and has been a consistent force against Sudbury this season.

Sudbury counters with guard Duane Notice, who orchestrated the March 28 win with 27 points and six assists. Notice has been a versatile catalyst, nearly averaging a triple-double with 19 points, 8.3 rebounds and 10 assists in a March 7 win over Montreal, and dishing 14 assists in a March 14 victory over Lake Erie.

Both teams are looking to rebound from narrow Sunday losses. Montreal fell 126-121 in overtime here on March 28, while Sudbury dropped a 100-98 decision to KW at home on March 29.

The season series suggests another close contest. Three of the five meetings have been decided by five points or fewer or required overtime. With Steward and Notice leading their respective sides, Friday’s game promises high stakes and another potential down-to-the-wire finish in this developing BSL rivalry.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT at Sudbury Community Arena.
