Quebradillas vs. Mayaguez
MAYAGÜEZ, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — The Quebradillas Piratas visit the Mayaguez Indios on Sunday at Palacio de Recreacion y Deportes in a Baloncesto Superior Nacional matchup that pits two teams trending in opposite directions.
Quebradillas (8-16) enters the contest having won four of its past five games, including a 90-85 victory at Santurce on Wednesday. The Piratas have struggled overall this season, but recent performances suggest a team finding its footing. Mayaguez (9-10) has split its last four games, most recently edging Ponce 92-90 on May 31. The Indios have been inconsistent, dropping three of their last five, but have dominated the head-to-head series this season.
Mayaguez has won all three meetings with Quebradillas this year, winning by an average margin of 20.3 points. The Indios defeated the Piratas 113-83 on May 6, 114-106 on April 19 and 103-80 on April 8. Those lopsided results give Mayaguez a clear psychological edge as the teams meet for the fourth time.
Players to Watch
Grant Basile has been Quebradillas’ most consistent performer during the recent surge. The center has averaged 18.4 points and 7.8 rebounds over his last five games, including back-to-back 23-point outings. Basile posted 23 points and eight rebounds in the win over Santurce, following a 23-point, six-rebound effort against Caguas on May 27. He also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds in a one-point win over Ponce on May 29.
Nathan Sobey has been the engine for Mayaguez, providing scoring and playmaking in nearly equal measure. The small forward is coming off a near triple-double against Ponce, finishing with 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Sobey has been a high-usage player, logging at least 37 minutes in three of his last four games, but his efficiency has varied. He shot well in the win over Ponce but struggled in a loss to Guaynabo, scoring just 10 points on limited touches.
Recent Form
Quebradillas has won four of its past five games, though all three wins in that stretch came by single-digit margins. The Piratas are 3-3 in their last six road games. Mayaguez is 3-4 in its last seven home contests and has won three of its last five overall. The Indios have been strong offensively in recent head-to-head meetings, averaging 110 points per game against Quebradillas this season.
