Guaynabo vs. Bayamon

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — The Bayamon Vaqueros host the Guaynabo Mets on Saturday at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in a Baloncesto Superior Nacional matchup that pits the league’s second-best record against a struggling visitor.

Bayamon (18-10) enters the 7 p.m. AST contest riding a 2-1 stretch in its past three outings, though the Vaqueros dropped a 94-93 heartbreaker to Carolina on Wednesday. Gary Browne, the team’s floor general, delivered 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists in that loss. Over his last five games, the point guard has averaged 13.4 points and 7.8 assists while shooting efficiently from the field. Browne’s playmaking will be critical against a Guaynabo defense that has allowed 101 or more points in three of its past four games.

Guaynabo (10-12) comes off a 101-78 loss at Ponce on Tuesday. Torrey Craig, the Mets’ leading scorer, posted 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists in that defeat. The small forward has been a consistent two-way force, averaging 15.6 points and 7.3 rebounds over his last eight appearances. Craig’s versatility — he’s recorded at least five assists in four of those eight games — gives Guaynabo a chance to exploit mismatches against Bayamon’s perimeter defenders.

The teams split their two prior meetings this season. Bayamon won 88-73 at home on April 15, but Guaynabo answered with a 90-80 victory on May 7. In that most recent matchup, Craig scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Mets. Bayamon’s Browne had a quiet night in the loss with 10 points and six assists.

Bayamon boasts the deeper roster: Javier Mojica and Jassel Perez combined for 34 points in Wednesday’s narrow defeat, and the Vaqueros rank among the BSN’s top five in scoring offense. Guaynabo, meanwhile, has leaned heavily on Craig and forwards Devin Williams and Brandon Knight, who each scored 15 points in Tuesday’s loss. The Mets have lost three of their last four and sit seven games below .500 in league play.

Saturday’s game also carries playoff implications. Bayamon is firmly in the hunt for a top seed, while Guaynabo needs wins to climb out of the middle of the standings. The Vaqueros have won six of their last eight at home; the Mets are 4-8 on the road.

Key matchup: Browne’s pick-and-roll chemistry versus Craig’s ability to guard multiple positions. If Guaynabo’s role players step up around Craig, the Mets could steal a road win. But Bayamon’s depth and home-court edge make it the favorite.
