Ponce vs. Arecibo
ARECIBO, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — The Arecibo Capitanes host the Ponce Leones on Thursday night at Manuel Iguina Coliseum in a Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) matchup that pits the league’s second-best team against one mired near the bottom of the standings.
Arecibo enters with a 13-6 record across all competitions, while Ponce struggles at 8-18. The Capitanes have won three of their last four games, most recently falling 88-82 at Quebradillas on May 31. In that loss, forward R.J. Melendez poured in 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting, adding five rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 35 minutes. Over his past three games, Melendez is averaging 18.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
Ponce has lost seven of its last eight contests, including a 92-90 defeat at Mayaguez on May 31. Jezreel De Jesus led the Leones with 27 points, four rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes. The veteran swingman has been a consistent scorer, averaging 17.3 points over his last eight outings, though Ponce has managed only one win in that span.
Thursday’s game is the fourth meeting this season between the two clubs. Arecibo won the first two matchups — 110-102 at home on March 31 and 101-82 on the road on April 8 — before Ponce claimed a 116-108 victory at Arecibo on April 24. De Jesus scored 22 points in that win, while former NBA guard Jalen Crutcher added 20 points and six assists.
Arecibo’s balanced attack also features guard Justin Reyes, who contributed 11 points and six rebounds in the Capitanes’ recent loss, and point guard Derrick Walton, who dished out seven assists. Ponce’s backcourt gets support from Crutcher (20 points, five boards, six assists last game) and Johned Walker (22 points).
Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. AST. Arecibo will visit San German on Sunday, while Ponce travels to Aguada on Saturday.
