Bayamon vs. Caguas

AP Sports Preview

Caguas, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — The Baloncesto Superior Nacional stage is set for a pivotal early-season clash Tuesday night when the Bayamon Vaqueros (14-8) visit the Caguas Criollos (10-6) at the Coliseo Roger Mendoza. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. AST.

Tuesday’s matchup carries significant weight in the BSN standings. Bayamon enters with a stronger overall record, but Caguas has owned the head-to-head series this season, winning both previous meetings — a 100-99 thriller at Bayamon on May 5 and a 96-90 decision on April 27.

The Vaqueros are looking to snap a two-game skid. Bayamon fell to Guaynabo 90-80 on May 7, a game in which veteran forward Jae Crowder logged 29 minutes, scoring 15 points with nine rebounds and five assists. Crowder has been a consistent force for Bayamon, averaging a double-double over his last three outings against Caguas, including a 22-point, 10-rebound performance in the May 5 narrow loss.

Caguas, meanwhile, arrives after a 94-89 setback against Manati on May 9. Forward Louis King led the Criollos in that contest with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists across 32 minutes. King has been a catalyst in Caguas’ success against Bayamon this season, posting 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the May 5 win.

Both teams feature balanced scoring. Bayamon’s supporting cast includes forward Xavier Cooks, who contributed 12 points and six rebounds in the loss to Guaynabo, and guard Stevie Thompson, who chipped in 14 points. Caguas counters with center Moses Brown, who recorded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds against Manati.

The series has produced high-scoring, tightly contested affairs. The two May meetings were decided by a combined seven points, with Caguas showing a knack for clutch execution in the final minutes.

Bayamon will look to Crowder, a former NBA player, to set the tone early and break the Criollos’ recent hold over the Vaqueros. Caguas will lean on King’s versatility and the interior presence of Brown to protect home court.

Following Tuesday’s game, Bayamon hosts San German on Thursday, while Caguas welcomes Quebradillas on the same night. The BSN regular season continues through early June.
