Arecibo vs. Aguada

AGUADA, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — The Arecibo Capitanes, owners of the best record in the Puerto Rican BSN, visit the Aguada Santeros on Friday at Coliseo de Aguada in a matchup of two teams heading in opposite directions.

Arecibo (10-4) has won its last two games and five of its last six, while Aguada (7-6) has dropped two straight after a 98-69 home loss to Carolina on Sunday. The Capitanes lead the season series 1-0 in the three-game set, having beaten the Santeros 95-90 on April 18 in Aguada. Aguada won the earlier meeting 85-83 on March 29 in Arecibo.

The Capitanes’ recent surge is fueled by point guard Derrick Walton, who has posted three double-doubles in his last five games. In Monday’s 87-85 win over Mayaguez, Walton logged 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in 34 minutes. He followed a 19-point, 11-assist, seven-rebound effort in a 90-85 win over San German on May 3. In the April 18 win at Aguada, Walton finished with 16 points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Arecibo also got strong contributions from forward Jack McVeigh, who scored 23 points in Monday’s win, and center Timothy Soares, who added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Aguada counters with swingman Rigoberto Mendoza De La Rosa, who has been inconsistent. He managed just six points and eight rebounds in Sunday’s loss to Carolina after scoring 19 points in each of the previous two games — a loss at Mayaguez and a win over San German. Mendoza is averaging 17.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists over his last seven games, including a 17-point, 10-rebound, five-assist performance in the April 18 loss to Arecibo.

The Santeros will need more from guard Matthew Lee, who had nine points and six assists against Carolina, and forward John Holland (10 points) to snap their losing streak.

Friday’s game is the second of three meetings this season. Arecibo leads the series in wins but Aguada has shown it can compete, with the March 29 victory. The Capitanes have won five of their last six road games, while the Santeros are 3-3 at home.

Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. AST.
