Bayamon vs. Aguada
BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — Two of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional’s hottest teams will clash Thursday when the Bayamon Vaqueros visit the Aguada Santeros at Coliseo de Aguada.
The Vaqueros (5-1), winners of five straight, bring the league’s best record into the early-season showdown. The Santeros (1-0) look to build momentum after a dramatic opening victory.
Bayamon’s surge has been fueled by balanced contributions and veteran leadership. Forward Renaldo Balkman, a player to watch, is coming off a strong performance in Friday’s 74-67 win over Quebradillas, posting 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. He is averaging 12 points and six rebounds over his last two games. Point guard Gary Browne added 15 points, six rebounds and seven assists in that victory.
However, they face an Aguada squad that opened its season with a statement. The Santeros edged Arecibo 85-83 on the road Sunday behind a stellar outing from guard Rigoberto Mendoza De La Rosa, who poured in 27 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished six assists. Forward John Brown also impressed with 14 points and seven assists.
The matchup pits Bayamon’s league-best form against an Aguada team that showed potent offensive firepower in its debut. The Vaqueros’ defense, which has held opponents to an average of 71 points during their win streak, will be tested by Mendoza and the Santeros’ backcourt.
This contest is the first of a home-and-home set between the clubs, who will meet again in Bayamon on Tuesday, April 7.
Thursday’s winner will gain an early advantage in what promises to be a competitive BSN season. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. AST at Coliseo de Aguada.
