Guaymas vs. Hermosillo

HERMOSILLO, Mexico (Interstat) — The Guaymas Ostioneros visit the Hermosillo Rayos on Saturday in a CIBACOPA matchup at Gimnasio del Estado de Sonora, with both teams looking to gain ground in the Mexican league standings.

Guaymas carries a 13-18 record across all competitions, while Hermosillo is 14-20. The teams split their two most recent meetings in late March, with Guaymas winning 91-87 at home on March 28 after Hermosillo took the opener 103-95 on March 27.

The Ostioneros enter after a 98-86 win over Venados on May 2. Guard Jimond Ivey has been Guaymas’ top performer, averaging 20.3 points over his last seven games. In the victory against Venados, Ivey played 38 minutes and posted 24 points, two rebounds and four assists. He also scored 24 points in a 107-90 win at Obregon on April 22 and dropped 26 points in a 104-93 road win on April 25. However, Guaymas has dropped three of its last five and will need consistent production from center Jaden Bediako, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the May 2 win, and point guard Terry Roberts (14 points, five rebounds, four assists).

Hermosillo is coming off a 108-104 loss at Tijuana on Wednesday, despite a monster game from forward KiAndre Gaddy. Gaddy logged 35 minutes and finished with 34 points, 14 rebounds, one assist and two blocks. He has been on a tear, scoring 50 points in a 119-103 win at Los Mochis on April 21 and 23 points in a 95-93 win at Tijuana on May 5. However, his minutes have fluctuated — he played just 13 minutes in a May 2 win over Culiacan and 18 minutes in an April 22 win at Los Mochis. Guard Donald Carey added 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Tijuana, while point guard R.J. Felton contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

The Rayos have won four of their last six, but their inconsistency has kept them below .500. Hermosillo’s home court at Gimnasio del Estado de Sonora could provide a boost; the team has shown offensive firepower, scoring at least 95 points in four of its last five contests.

Guaymas will need to slow Gaddy, who has recorded double-doubles in two of his last three games. The Ostioneros’ defense has been vulnerable, allowing 111 points in a loss to Jal. Astros on April 28 and 115 to Obregon on April 21. Conversely, Hermosillo must contain Ivey, who has topped 20 points in five of his last seven outings.

Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday night.
