Edmonton Stingers vs. Saskatoon Mamba
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (Interstat) — The Saskatoon Mamba host the Edmonton Stingers on Wednesday night at SaskTel Centre in a Canadian Elite Basketball League matchup that pits a team riding a hot streak against one searching for answers.
Saskatoon (6-5) enters the 7 p.m. local tipoff on a four-game winning streak, most recently an 101-98 victory Sunday at Ottawa. Forward Tevian Jones has been the catalyst, pouring in 36 points on 32 minutes with four rebounds and four assists in that win. Over his last five games, Jones has averaged 17.2 points and 3.2 boards while shooting efficiently, including a 16-point effort against Ottawa Blackjacks on June 15 and a 14-point showing at Niagara on June 19.
The Mamba have won six of their past seven after a 2-4 start. Their balanced attack features forward Jaylin Williams (14 points, nine rebounds Sunday) and point guard Tavian Dunn-Martin (12 points, six assists). Saskatoon’s only loss in that stretch came June 6 at Fraser Valley, 105-85.
Edmonton (5-10) has lost four straight, including an 86-107 defeat Saturday at Winnipeg. Center Nick Hornsby had 15 points, five boards and four assists in that game, but the Stingers have struggled defensively, allowing 98.3 points per game over their losing skid. Hornsby’s production has been uneven: after a solid 15-point outing at Winnipeg, he managed seven points against Montreal on June 17 and eight points versus Scarborough on June 13. He averages 10.0 points and 4.7 rebounds over his last three.
The Stingers’ lone bright spot in recent weeks came June 7 when they beat Montreal 98-78, but they have since dropped three in a row at home. Forward Tre King contributed 17 points in the loss to Winnipeg, and point guard Emmanuel Bandoumel added 12 points and four assists.
Wednesday’s game is the first of a home-and-home set; the teams meet again Sunday in Edmonton. Saskatoon has won three of its last four at home, while Edmonton is 2-6 on the road.
Key matchup to watch: Jones’ perimeter scoring against Edmonton’s switching defense. The Stingers have allowed opponents to shoot 47% from the field during their slide. If Hornsby can find consistency and Edmonton’s bench provides support, the Stingers could snap their skid. But Saskatoon’s momentum and balanced scoring make them heavy favorites.
The CEBL’s summer schedule continues with both teams jockeying for playoff positioning. Saskatoon sits third in the Western Conference, while Edmonton is sixth.
