Hamilton vs. Calgary

CALGARY, Alberta (Interstat) — The Hamilton Honey Badgers visit the Calgary Surge on Wednesday in a Canadian Elite Basketball League matchup at WinSport Event Centre, with both teams looking to reverse recent fortunes.

Hamilton (7-5) holds a solid record but is coming off a 105-92 loss at Montreal on June 10. The Honey Badgers have won three of their last five games, including a 97-86 victory at Niagara on June 5 and an 87-86 home win over Edmonton on June 3.

Calgary (7-11) has lost five straight, most recently an 107-88 home defeat to Winnipeg on June 14. The Surge have dropped seven of their last eight games, with their only win in that span coming against Edmonton on May 31.

The teams met earlier this season on May 17 in Hamilton, where the Honey Badgers cruised to a 91-72 victory. That result extended Hamilton’s head-to-head dominance; the Honey Badgers have won the last two meetings.

Hamilton guard Sean East has been the team’s engine, averaging 24.6 points and 7.1 assists over his last seven games. In the loss at Montreal, East posted 28 points and 10 assists in 36 minutes. He also recorded a 35-point, eight-assist outing against Fraser Valley on May 30. East leads a balanced Hamilton attack that also features forward Keon Ambrose-Hylton, who grabbed 11 rebounds in the Montreal game, and center Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe, who had 12 points and nine boards.

Calgary will rely on guard Sean Miller-Moore, who has scored at least 17 points in each of his last seven outings. In the loss to Winnipeg, Miller-Moore had 20 points, four rebounds and four assists. He posted 29 points against Edmonton on May 31 and 23 points against Scarborough on May 28. However, the Surge have struggled to support him consistently; the team has allowed 100 or more points in four of its last five games.

Defensively, Calgary will need to contain East, who has averaged 24.8 points and 7.8 assists in his last six contests. The Surge’s interior defense, anchored by center Javonte Brown (nine points, seven rebounds, four blocks vs. Winnipeg), will be tested by Hamilton’s frontcourt.

Wednesday’s game is the second of two regular-season meetings. Hamilton plays at Fraser Valley on Saturday, while Calgary hosts Montreal on Saturday.

Tipoff is at 7 p.m. MDT.
