Scarborough vs. Calgary

CALGARY (Interstat) — The Scarborough Shooting Stars take their league-best 5-1 record into WinSport Event Centre on Thursday to face the Calgary Surge (7-4) in a Canadian Elite Basketball League matchup.

Scarborough enters riding a three-game winning streak, most recently a 107-103 home victory over Saskatoon on May 21. Power forward Aamir Simms has been a dominant force, recording a double-double in that game with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Over his past two outings, Simms has averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds while shooting efficiently. The Shooting Stars’ offense has been balanced, with guard Myles Powell pouring in 27 points against Saskatoon and forward Javan Johnson adding 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Calgary, however, has dropped three straight, all on the road. The Surge were defeated 111-101 at Fraser Valley on Sunday despite a 31-point, seven-assist performance from point guard Evan Gilyard. Gilyard has been inconsistent recently — he scored 32 points in an 88-93 loss at Ottawa on May 12, but managed only eight points in a 72-91 defeat at Hamilton on May 17. Calgary’s defense has been vulnerable, allowing 101 or more points in two of the last three games.

The Surge are 4-1 at home this season while Scarborough is 2-1 on the road. Calgary’s interior presence, led by forward Olumide Adelodun (19 points, five rebounds at Fraser Valley), will need to contain Simms in the paint. Guard Jon Elmore adds scoring depth for the Surge.

Thursday’s game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the clubs; they face again June 6 in Scarborough. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. MT.
