Botafogo vs. Vasco da Gama

Preview: Botafogo Faces Vasco da Gama in Rio NBB Clash

RIO DE JANEIRO (Interstat) — Two struggling Rio de Janeiro rivals will meet Saturday when Botafogo visits Vasco da Gama in a Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) matchup at Ginásio São Januário.

Both clubs enter the contest at the bottom of the league standings, seeking to salvage difficult seasons. Botafogo holds a 10-22 record across all competitions, while Vasco da Gama sits at 5-29.

The visiting Botafogo will rely heavily on guard Matheus Brito, who is coming off a spectacular 50-point performance in an 89-102 loss to Flamengo on April 11. Over his last six games, Brito is averaging 21.5 points and 6.5 assists, demonstrating his role as the team’s primary offensive engine. His playmaking will be critical against a Vasco defense that has allowed an average of 90.2 points in its last five outings.

Vasco da Gama, mired in a five-game losing streak, will counter with forward Lamar Morgan. He led the team with 15 points and six rebounds in a 75-95 road loss to Flamengo on April 14. Consistency has been an issue for Morgan, however, as his scoring has fluctuated from 2 to 15 points over the past month. Support from Guillherme Silva (17 points vs. Flamengo) and center Thiago Mathias (11 points, 9 rebounds) will be necessary.

The teams last met on Oct. 22, 2025, with Botafogo securing an 85-76 home victory. Botafogo has shown slightly more recent form, with two wins in its last six games, including an 80-70 victory over Cruzeiro on April 6. Vasco da Gama’s last win was a narrow 88-86 triumph over Osasco Basquete on March 14.

Saturday’s game represents one of the final opportunities for each squad to build momentum before the season concludes. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time.
