Minas vs. Flamengo
RIO DE JANEIRO (Interstat) — A pivotal clash atop the Brazilian Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) standings is set for Monday when Flamengo hosts Minas at HSBC Arena.
Both teams enter with identical 28-win records, though Minas (28-11) holds a slightly higher winning percentage and has three fewer losses than Flamengo (28-14). The matchup is a rematch of a Dec. 23 thriller, which Flamengo won 87-85 on the road.
Minas arrives in strong form, winning four of its last five games, including a 101-88 victory over Cruzeiro on April 1. Center Alexandre Paranhos has been a key contributor, averaging 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds over his last eight games. He posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Osasco Basquete on March 22.
Flamengo seeks to rebound from a narrow 76-74 road loss to Caxias Do Sul on April 2, its third consecutive defeat. Guard Shaquille Johnson has been a consistent playmaker during this stretch, averaging 15.3 points and 5.4 assists over his last seven contests. He scored 23 points and dished seven assists in a win over Pinheiros on March 19.
The game features a contrast in recent momentum. Minas has found consistent production behind Paranhos and forward Erik McCree, who had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double in the last outing. Flamengo will rely on Johnson and center Markeith Cummings to ignite its offense and snap the current skid.
Monday’s result will have significant implications for postseason positioning as the regular season enters its final weeks. Following this game, Flamengo will host Cruzeiro on Wednesday, while Minas visits Botafogo on Thursday.
