Peñarol vs. La Union

FORMAZA, Argentina (Interstat) — Two teams trending in opposite directions will meet Tuesday when La Unión hosts Peñarol in an Argentinian Liga A matchup at Estadio Cincuentenario.

La Unión (17-15) looks to snap a four-game losing streak, while Peñarol (16-13) aims to build on a narrow victory in its last outing.

The home side has struggled since a 103-91 win over Independiente on March 18, dropping consecutive decisions to Boca Juniors, Ferro Carril Oeste, Olimpico and Quimsa. In Tuesday’s 82-61 road loss to Quimsa, forward Alexis Elsener posted 17 points and 11 rebounds. Elsener has been a consistent bright spot, averaging 18 points and 6.8 rebounds over his last five games.

Peñarol edged Sante Fe 85-83 at home on April 4, led by 17 points from guard Agustin Perez. Perez is averaging 13.4 points over his last five contests. Center Ivan Basualdo added 8 points and 8 rebounds in the win.

The visitors have shown resilience on the road this season, with recent away wins at Instituto Cordoba and Independiente in March.

Historically, matches between these mid-table sides have been closely contested. The game could hinge on which team controls the paint, featuring a key matchup between La Unión’s Elsener and Peñarol’s Basualdo.

La Unión will look to leverage home-court advantage in Formosa to reverse its recent fortunes, while Peñarol seeks a winning record and momentum before visiting Obera on Thursday.
