Peñarol vs. Atenas

Preview: Peñarol Looks to Continue Push Against Struggling Atenas

CÓRDOBA, Argentina (Interstat) — A surging Peñarol squad visits a reeling Atenas team in a Liga Nacional matchup Tuesday at Polideportivo Municipal Carlos Cerutti.

The visiting Peñarol (14-12) enters on a positive note, coming off a 107-102 road victory over Independiente on Friday. The team has won three of its last five games as it seeks to solidify its position in the league table.

Atenas (8-21), meanwhile, is mired in a five-game losing streak, most recently falling 85-73 to Instituto Cordoba at home on Friday. The team has managed just one win in its last 10 outings, a stretch that includes a 67-73 loss to Obras Sanitarias and an 83-90 defeat to Gimnasia Indalo.

A key matchup will feature two productive centers. Peñarol’s Ivan Basualdo is averaging a near double-double in recent play. He posted 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in the win over Independiente and had a 10-point, 14-rebound performance against San Lorenzo on March 14.

For Atenas, Nakye Sanders has been a bright spot during the skid, recording a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Instituto. He also had 14 points and 11 rebounds against Obras Sanitarias on March 22.

The teams last met on Dec. 13, 2025, with Peñarol securing an 87-67 home victory.

Peñarol’s recent success has been fueled by balanced contributions. In the win over Independiente, Facundo Vazquez dished nine assists and Sean Armand added 18 points off the bench.

Atenas will need more from its supporting cast around Sanders. Luciano Gonzalez scored 10 points in the last game, and Danjel Purifoy added 11, but the team has consistently struggled to find consistent scoring and defensive stops in the fourth quarter.

Following this contest, Peñarol will host Sante Fe on April 4. Atenas continues its homestand against Platense on April 5.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time.
