Montreal vs. Sudbury
SUDBURY, Ont. (Interstat) — The Sudbury Five and Montreal Toundra will meet for the seventh time this season with their playoff series on the line when the Basketball Super League postseason continues Saturday at Sudbury Community Arena.
The best-of-five series is tied 1-1, with Game 3 serving as the pivotal swing contest. The Five, who finished the regular season 10-8 overall, will have home-court advantage as they seek to regain the momentum after dropping a 102-99 overtime decision in Montreal on March 8 in the most recent matchup. The Toundra, 9-9 overall, took two of three games in a regular-season series against Sudbury from March 6-8.
Montreal enters riding high after a dominant 133-104 road victory over Lake Erie on March 22. Guard Tafari Beckford was instrumental in that win, posting 25 points and 11 assists. Beckford has been a key barometer for the Toundra, averaging 25 points in two victories this month but struggling with consistency in losses. His playmaking will be critical against Sudbury’s defense.
The Five, meanwhile, look to rebound from a 105-97 home loss to KW on March 22. Guard Emmanuel Akot led Sudbury with 19 points in that contest and will be relied upon for scoring punch. Sudbury’s offense has shown high potential, including a 141-point outburst against Lake Erie on March 14, but has been uneven lately.
The teams have split their last four meetings, with the road team winning three times. Montreal won the only previous game in Sudbury this season, 121-110 on Jan. 3.
Tipoff is set for Saturday night in Greater Sudbury. The winner will take a 2-1 series lead, moving within one victory of advancing in the BSL playoffs.
