Cancun El Calor vs. Gambusinos

CANCUN, Mexico (Interstat) — In a matchup between two teams struggling to find consistency in the early stages of the Mexican LNBP season, the home-standing Gambusinos used a dominant first quarter to build an insurmountable lead, ultimately defeating Cancun El Calor 81 to 68 on Friday night.

Despite entering the contest with a dismal 2-12 record, Gambusinos played with an early intensity that the visitors from Cancun could not match. The home team exploded for 32 points in the opening period, establishing a 19-point lead that set the tone for the entire game. Cancun El Calor, which had been projected as the favorite with a 56.3 percent win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, found itself in a deep hole from which it could never fully recover.

The game was a tale of two halves, or more accurately, a tale of one explosive quarter. After the 32-point first-quarter outburst, Gambusinos’ offense cooled considerably, scoring just 20 points in the second, 11 in the third, and 18 in the fourth. Cancun, meanwhile, showed flashes of life, outscoring Gambusinos 40 to 29 across the second and third quarters. However, the damage from the initial period was too severe to overcome, as El Calor’s comeback attempts were consistently stifled by timely Gambusinos baskets.

A significant disparity in shooting efficiency was the primary story of the box score. Gambusinos displayed remarkable accuracy, connecting on 28 of their 59 field goal attempts for a 47.5 percent clip. They were even more potent from beyond the arc, hitting 9 of 21 three-point attempts. Cancun El Calor, by stark contrast, suffered through an abysmal shooting night. The team made just 26 of 73 shots from the floor, a 35.6 percent rate, and was a frigid 8 for 43 from three-point range, a paltry 18.6 percent.

The advanced metrics further illustrated the offensive struggles for Cancun and the efficient performance from Gambusinos. Gambusinos scored 81 points on 77 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 105.2. Cancun El Calor managed only 68 points from 78 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of just 87.5.

Gambusinos was led by a standout performance from small forward Lucas Doria, who posted a double-double with a team-high 17 points and 12 rebounds in 33 minutes of action. He was complemented by a balanced scoring attack. Center Byron Allen, a native of Leland, Mississippi, facilitated the offense masterfully, dishing out 9 assists to go along with his 17 points. Point guard Michael Bryson of Sacramento, California, provided a strong two-way presence, scoring 14 points and recording 3 blocks. Power forward Josh Cunningham added 12 points and 6 rebounds, while center Jabari Narcis contributed 10 points off the bench.

For Cancun El Calor, point guard Lance Jones was the lone bright spot on offense, leading all scorers with 17 points. Power forward Nate Grimes provided energy off the pine, recording 10 points and 7 rebounds in just 17 minutes. Veteran power forward J.J. Avila filled the stat sheet with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks in a team-high 38 minutes. Jimond Ivey added 8 points and 6 rebounds, and center Gerard Devaughn of Fairburn, Georgia, also scored 8 points.

The teams were even in several statistical categories, each finishing with 35 total rebounds, 9 assists, and 9 steals. Cancun El Calor dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 13 offensive rebounds to Gambusinos’ 6, but was unable to convert those second-chance opportunities into enough points to close the gap.

The victory improves Gambusinos’ season record to 3 wins and 12 losses, offering a positive note in what has been a challenging campaign. Cancun El Calor sees its record fall to 6-8, snapping the momentum from a 90-60 blowout win over San Luis Potosi in its previous outing.

The two teams are scheduled for an immediate rematch, as Cancun El Calor will travel to face Gambusinos again on Saturday night. For Gambusinos, the win provides a blueprint for success: high-energy starts and efficient shooting. For Cancun El Calor, the search for answers continues after a performance defined by a disastrous opening quarter and a catastrophic shooting display that wasted a winnable opportunity on the road.
