MOSCOW (Interstat) — Sergei Skvortsov scored at 17:52 of the first period, and goaltender Denis Kostin made 29 saves, as Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod defeated Spartak Moscow 1-0 on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Luzhniki Minor Arena. Kostin, 6-foot-0 and 201 pounds, earned the win by turning aside all 29 shots he faced. Ivan Fedotov took the loss, stopping 18 of 19 shots for Spartak. Skvortsov’s goal came with assists from Igor Geraskin and Pavel Kraskovsky. Torpedo improved to 1-0-0, while Spartak fell to 0-1-0 in the Kontinental Hockey League season opener for both teams.
